The Karlstejn Castle [Hrad Karlštejn]
It was not built as a strategic stronghold, but to safeguard the holy relics and coronation insignia. The Karlstejn Castle is said to be never defeated. closest to the victory was the Swedish army which managed to intrude into a part of the castle but the Main Tower where the jewels were kept remained undefeated. The castle was built in the 14th century by Mathew of Arras [Matyáš z Arrasu] and Peter Parler [Petr Parléř], but much of what can be seen today is a reconstruction from the 19th century.
At the time of writing this article, the castle is open from 9.00 AM and closes between 3 PM and 6 PM depending on the season. From the Karlstejn rail station it takes about 20-30 minutes up the hill to get to the castle. Foreign language guided tours also available.
